Monarch Madness comes to Fennessey Ranch in Refugio County, sponsored by TLC2 and Nikon. Schoolchildren from throughout the Coastal Bend come to Fennessey to learn about the environment and observe the migration of monarch butterflies.

Renowned photographers Frederick Baldwin and Wendy Watriss will speak about their work at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston. The event, presented by the UH Visual Studies program, marks the first time the duo has discussed their portfolio in public in nearly 30 years. The presentation begins at 6:30 p.m., and will be followed by a book signing and reception at 7:30.

Margaret Mead Film and Video Festival
The Margaret Mead Traveling Film and Video Festival brought six documentaries to the University of Houston at the end of the spring semester. Filmmakers from the U.S., Iran, Bolivia, India, and the Netherlands grapple with social, cultural, and environmental issues in the areas of gender, borders, and water politics. A second group of films will be presented at a fall Mead Film Festival on October 10, 2009.
Anthropology Underground: Pilgrimage
Although there are now numerous films on the mass incarceration of Japanese Americans during World War II, this dark chapter of American history lay virtually forgotten until 1969 when two young Japanese Americans set out to find a place called Manzanar and ended up creating an annual event that has since attracted thousands of people. Calling it a "pilgrimage," it was the first public event in the nation to call attention to the reality of the WWII concentration camp experience that had almost been deleted from public understanding.
